Hard Drive Repair & Replacement

Clicking, grinding, or the computer no longer sees the drive at all? Stop powering it on and talk to us first. From $79 — call (207) 877-7780.

A hard drive rarely dies without warning. It gets loud, or slow, or the computer hangs for thirty seconds on a folder that used to open instantly. Those are the symptoms worth acting on, because a drive that is starting to fail is far easier to get data off than one that has finished failing.

Bring it in and we will tell you which of the two you are dealing with: a drive that can be recovered and replaced calmly, or one that needs to come out of the machine right now.

Symptoms we see most

🔊

Clicking or beeping

The "click of death." Physical trouble inside the drive — power it off and stop using it.

🚫

Drive not detected

BIOS or Windows no longer lists the drive, or it shows up with the wrong size.

🐌

Suddenly very slow

Long freezes opening files, and a machine that takes minutes to boot. Often a drive with failing sectors.

💙

Blue screens & boot loops

Windows failing to start, repair loops, or "no bootable device" on startup.

⚠️

S.M.A.R.T. warnings

A "hard disk failure is imminent" message at boot. Treat that as a real deadline.

🔁

Replace & migrate

Once the data is safe, we install a fast SSD and move your files and programs over.

Repair, recover, or replace?

Those are three different jobs and it is worth knowing which one you need.

A drive with bad sectors but healthy hardware can often be stabilised long enough to move everything off it. A drive with mechanical damage — the clicking kind — is not something to repair and keep using; the job there is getting the data out. And a drive that is simply old and slow is a straightforward replacement: we clone it to an SSD and you get a noticeably faster machine out of it.

We will tell you which situation you are in before you spend anything.

Hard drive repair — common questions

My hard drive is clicking. Can it be fixed?
Clicking almost always means physical damage inside the drive. The realistic goal at that point is recovering your data, not returning the drive to service. Power it off and bring it in — repeated power-ons make things worse.
The computer says the drive is not detected. Is my data gone?
Not necessarily. Drives disappear for several reasons — a failed controller board, a bad cable, or file system corruption — and several of those still leave your data fully intact. We diagnose it before assuming the worst.
What does it cost?
Diagnostics and drive service start at $79. If data recovery is needed on top of that, we quote it separately once we know what condition the drive is in.
Should I replace my hard drive with an SSD?
On most computers more than a few years old, that single change is the biggest speed improvement available. We can clone your existing drive to an SSD so your files and programs come across as they are.
My computer warned about "imminent hard disk failure." How long do I have?
There is no way to know — it could be weeks or it could be tomorrow. Treat it as a real deadline. Get your data copied off and the drive replaced before it stops entirely.
Can you work on external and portable drives?
Yes — external desktop drives, portable USB drives, and the drives inside laptops and desktops.
Can I mail my drive in?
Yes. We take mail-in drives from anywhere in the U.S. Start on our mail-in page with a $25 deposit that goes toward the work.
